This weekend, tens of thousands of people are expected to come to Washington D.C. for the March for America-- a major march and rally on the National Mall in support of comprehensive immigration reform. Will you be there?

Knowing that many of our New Latino Movement (NLM) friends are travelling into town, we’ve organized and heard of several events that we hope you will participate in. These events are a great way to meet inspiring organizers and leaders from across the country. Please be sure to RSVP for each of the events you want to attend!

• 11:30 a.m., PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA’S HEALTH SPEECH @ George Mason University Patriot Center (4500 Patriot Circle, Fairfax, VA 22030). On the eve of a historic vote in the House of Representatives, President Obama will speak on the urgent need for health reform. Free and open to the public. • 2 p.m., NLM CAREER PANEL “Beyond the Bus: Careers that empower and make a difference in our community” in partnership with La Unidad Latina, Gamma Epsilon, Professional Graduate Chapter @ George Washington University (Marvin Center Room 307, 800 21st St NW Washington DC, 20037). Featuring speakers from Congress, the Administration, campaigns and nonprofit worlds. Metro: GWU-Foggy Bottom. NOTE: This is an off-the-record event and closed to press. • 7 p.m. NLM DINNER IN D.C. with leadership applicants interested

• 10 a.m. NLM TRAIL OF DREAMS PRE-RALLY BRUNCH @ Arlington County Government Room 1 (2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington, VA.) With Guest Speakers Walter Tejada (Arlington County Board Member), John Amaya (Associate Director of Immigration at the National Council of La Raza), and Ayrianne Parks (Communications Specialist for the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs). Metro: Courthouse. $6 per person. Please pay in advance & register at http://bit.ly/NLM321Brunch.

• Noon. NLM & LATINO GREEK UNITY BUSES. Board buses @ Key Elementary School (2300 Key Boulevard, Arlington, VA.) to head into DC for the march. Metro: Courthouse. RSVP for the NLM Bus at http://bit.ly/NLMBus. Latino Greeks can sign up for their bus by calling 703-684-5697 x318. We’ll meet local/national organizations at Lafayette Park (The White House) to gather for a small rally then march to meet Latino Greeks at the National Museum of Natural History (on Madison St. Between 9th and 12th Street, at the front entrance facing the National Mall) and then march to site together.  

• 2-4 p.m. MARCH FOR AMERICA @ National Mall in Washington, D.C. March starts at 7th Street between Jefferson and Madison streets. The audience area will flow all the way back to 14th St between Jefferson and Madison. Note: Wear white shirts and bring American flags!

From Capitol Hill to federal agencies to nonprofit advocacy groups, there are sooo many ways to help make a difference for our communities through a range of great jobs in Washington, D.C. To share with you the stories of how amazing people are helping the Latino community from the nation's capital, and to help give you ideas on how YOU can make a difference here too, we'll be organizing a Saturday afternoon career panel.

Our friends with the DC Latino Professionals Meetup Group, a group networking and social group for Latino Professionals in the DC Metro area, are celebrating three years of great events, community service and friendships. NLM will be joining in celebrating their anniversary party at Heritage in the heart of Dupont Circle. The group’s anniversary parties have attracted over 200 people each time and a great turnout is expected again. There will be a meet and greet from 10-11 p.m., mingling and dancing to DJ Hercules’ Latin mix of salsa, merengue, bachata with a touch of reggaeton, etc, as well as a few surprises. Dress code is upscale. Not necessarily black tie, but don't be afraid to dress up.

If you've been following the immigration issue this year, you've probably heard of the Trail of Dreams effort. On January 1, 2010, four students from Miami (Felipe Matos, Gaby Pacheco, Carlos Roa, and Juan Rodriguez) decided to march 1,500 miles from Florida to Washington, D.C. in support of the Dream Act. We're putting together an inspirational lineup of speakers who, like the Trail of Dreams students, are giving much heart and work to helping address our nation's immigration challenges.

We hope you'll join us for a special pre-rally brunch to hear from some very moving leaders including:

• WALTER TEJADA, Arlington County Board Member who was born in El Salvador and in 2003 became the first Latino elected in Arlington. A community advocate, Mr. Tejada has distinguished himself as a leader committed to enhancing the diversity of Arlington and the region's community voice--with dedication that has earned him numerous honors, including the prestigious "Ohtli Award" given by the Mexican government to distinguished Latinos for their support to the service of the Mexican community living in the United States.
• JOHN AMAYA, the Associate Director of Immigration at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) who previously was the Legislative Staff Attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) where he played a pivotal role in the nomination of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court and was counsel to the family of Luis Ramirez, a murdered 25-year-old Mexican immigrant and victim of hate crime in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.
• AYRIANNE PARKS, Communications Specialist for the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs and its member organizations serve farmworkers in 49 states and Puerto Rico. AFOP’s Children in the Fields campaign strives to improve the quality of life of migrant and seasonal farmworker children. They've been working to raise the visibility of the child migrant issues through partnerships such as their partnership with the filmmakers of "The Harvest: The Story of the Children Who Work to Feed America," a documentary following five migrant children for a year.

(6) SIGN UP TO RIDE THE NEW LATINO MOVEMENT & LATINO GREEK UNITY BUSES FROM VA INTO DC!

Our friends with the Tenant Workers United are making available a bus to us to bring people from our Pre-Rally Trail of Dreams Brunch into the DC area for the march! We're going to do our best to accommodate as many as we can but please tell us ASAP if you are interested in riding the bus after brunch, around Noon, into DC for the march.  

We’re also very excited that this is also the official VA Bus Pick-Up Point for the Latina/o Greek Lettered Organizations of the National Capital Area and hope Latino Greek friends will join us for breakfast before boarding the bus.

MARCH FOR AMERICA
National Mall, Washington, D.C.

After the Trail of Dreams Brunch, we'll head over to the National Mall to join tens of thousands of people standing in solidarity in support of immigration reform for new American families and economic justice for all American families. 

Our Agenda:

• Noon. Board buses at Key Elementary School to head into Washington, D.C. Meet local/national organizations at Lafayette Park (The White House) to gather for a small rally.
• 1:30 p.m. March together to National Mall.
• Latino Greeks will march to meet other Latino Greeks at the National Museum of Natural History on Madison St. Between 9th and 12th Street, at the front entrance facing the National Mall, and then march to site together.  
• 2-4 p.m. Reform Immigration for America March on the National Mall.
• Our buses will wait for us at Air and Space Museum for pick up between 4-5 p.m. to drop us back off at original location at Francis Scott Key Elementary. 

NOTE: EVERYBODY IS ENCOURAGED TO WEAR WHITE SHIRTS AND BRING AMERICAN FLAGS!
